Health insurance is a necessity. Yet, 9.1% of people in the US live without it. If you’re one of them or you’re someone who’s thinking about changing your insurance provider, you need to be careful. Health insurance fraud is very common; about $68 billion are lost to health fraud in the US annually. Here’s what you can do to avoid health insurance scams.
Avoid Too-Good-To-Be-True Deals
Health Insurance is a profitable industry, and all private companies in the industry operate with a profit motive. If the deal you’re being offered provides amazing coverage for enticingly low premiums, it’s better to stay away from it. Don’t let greed influence your decision.
Avoid Vague Deals
Scammers often use big words in their pitch to gain credibility, but will keep the details of the deal ambiguous.
Insurance is, by nature, a complex affair; this is why you need to know basic details like deductibles, plans for payment, and terms of termination, etc. If you’re not given such basic details, stay away from the deal.
Never Get Pressurized to Make a Hasty Decision
Scammers can’t afford to give their target a lot of time to decide. If the target gets a little research done, it’s very probable that they’ll catch the lies. So if you’re being pressurized to agree to a deal on the spot without being given time to research, recognize that the deal is a scam.
Legitimate companies are happy to give you more details so that you can make an informed decision. Only scammers are overly hasty, because they have to cover their lies.
Cross-Check the Company and the Employee
Again, con-men will use official words and terminology to gain credibility. Cross-check the company’s name on the government’s official website and the employee’s name with the company in order to confirm that the whole thing is not a con.
The government provides a list of all registered companies and all good companies let you verify their agent’s employment. So do verify; better to be safe than to be sorry.
